Seriously ill parent



This ebooklet provides teachers and other professionals working in schools with information about the possible effects of living with an ill parent as well as strategies that can be used to support the child at school. Individual strategies be modified to included in a student’s Individual Learning Plan or psychologist’s report recommendations.

These strategies are designed for use with students in primary and junior secondary schools.

  • Provide social and emotional support
  • Establish contact with family and maintain regular communication
  • Teach pro-active problem solving and coping strategies
  • Provide the child with accurate age-appropriate information
  • If a child talks to you about a traumatic event that occurred as a result of their parent's illness
  • If the child talks to you about a recent event that may be considered abuse or neglect
  • Resources
